The Chinese Department of the School of Humanities at Jiangnan University can be traced back to the Literary College founded by Mr. Qian Mu in 1948 at betway官方登录 The major of Chinese Language and Literature was established in 1981. It currently offers a master's program in the first-level discipline of Chinese Language and Literature, with five second-level master's specializations including Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Literary Theory, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. In 2020, the teaching track was reintroduced.


The department boasts a strong and well-structured faculty team, consisting of 34 full-time teachers, with nearly 90% of them holding associate professor or higher positions. More than 60% of the faculty members have doctoral degrees and serve as supervisors for master's students. The department has made remarkable achievements in the fields of traditional Chinese culture research, ancient book compilation and chronological writing, regional cultural studies, poetics and aesthetics research, literary trends, film and media culture research. It has achieved fruitful results in research areas such as "Wu culture research," "Research on historical and cultural figures in Jiangnan," "Research on academic and cultural studies in Southern Jiangsu," and "Dialects and local culture."

The department has gathered a group of elite faculty members, with nearly 90% of them holding associate professor or higher positions, and over 60% of them having doctoral degrees and serving as supervisors for master's students. They engage in extensive academic research, yielding fruitful results and contributing significantly to the development of local culture. The research and dissemination of Wu culture, in particular, have gained wide acclaim and recognition.

Training Objectives

This program is designed to meet the requirements of the new era's national basic education reform and development, aiming to cultivate highly qualified teachers in Chinese language education. Students are expected to undergo four years of professional study, develop a firm and correct political stance, possess profound humanistic literacy, and have a broad social perspective. They will systematically master the disciplines of Chinese language and literature and education, demonstrate strong abilities in educational practice, teaching research, and lifelong learning. Upon graduation, they should be capable of engaging in relevant work in Chinese language education at primary and secondary schools, and achieve a promising professional development.
