Course Description:
An Introduction to Research Methods in Linguistics is an optional course for English majors. The object of this course is to offer basic theories, current research methods as well as relevant tools and technology in researching. By studying this course, the students will be able to grasp and explain the fundamental concepts in language research methodology and educational statistics, learn how to conduct research designs in both quantitative and qualitative ways such as through experimental research, survey study and case studies by focusing on specific language problems. They will also be taught how to collect and analyze data (e.g. how to use SPSS) and learn how to explain and discuss the research results. Students will also acquire knowledge as to how to best apply the basic concepts and methods in applied linguistics and use this to solve practical problems in second language acquisition as well as mastering how to write research report and academic papers.
