The School of Science, Jiangnan University has three master’s degree authorization units, including a primary discipline of Optical Engineering (080300), a professional degree of “Optical Engineering (085202)”, and secondary disciplines of Applied Mathematics (070104). 40 of the faculty member are qualified for supervising master students. There are several provincial-level teaching and research platforms such as Jiangsu light industry optoelectronic engineering and technology center, Jiangsu (Suntech) photovoltaic research institute, physics experiment teaching demonstration center of Jiangsu. The school has established 7 graduate workstation in cooperation with local institutions (e.g., Wuxi Quality Inspection Institute).
In the past five years, the School has published more than 800 papers in the three major science and technology literature retrieval system. 2 of them have been ranked the top 1% of ESI's high-cited papers. The School assumes 47 national natural science funds, and participates in many national key research projects such as "973", "863", and international cooperation projects. The total research funding reaches 22 million yuan. The research of faculty has won 12 national and provincial awards for individuals, and more than 500 patents are granted for the research findings. The School has been working closely with domestic and international universities to maintain continuous cooperations. Many students after graduation continue to conduct research at famous universities such as Cambridge University, Tokyo University, and California University.
Discipline of Optical Engineering
The primary discipline of optical engineering, key discipline construction of Jiangnan university, was approved for master's degree authorization in 2006. Currently, there are 5 research areas and directions including advanced spectrum technology and applications, optical imaging, micro-nano photonic devices, optoelectronic devices and functional materials, and optical communication and optical information. The school has professional laboratories (1600 square meters), and advanced equipment and facilities (valued close to 20 million), as well as three provincial teaching and research platforms. In the past four years, the school has assumed more than 70 research projects and published more than 300 scientific research papers. The total funding exceeded 10 million yuan. 22 of the faculty were qualified for supervising master students. Of them, 2 were selected for the “Qinlan Project” in Jiangsu province, 2 were selected for the 333 projects in Jiangsu Province, 2 were selected as the outstanding young teachers of the ministry of education, and 2 external tutors were selected for the “Thousand talents plan Program”. Since 2009, 95 students have accpted training and graduated from school of science, and currently, there are 50 graduate students. In the past four years, two graduate students have obtained excellent degree thesis from Jiangsu Province. The demand for these graduate students outreaches our supply in recent years.

Taking scientific research as a foundation, the industry demand as a guide, and technology development as a carrier, the Discipline of Optical Engineering of Jiangnan University has embarked on a development path with distinctive characteristics of leveraging local resources and serving the society and economy.
Emphasizing traditional advantages and promoting innovation and development:on the basis of continuing to maintain the traditional advantages of research fields such as photovoltaic technology, food spectroscopy, and atmospheric optical communication, the School vigorously promotes new technologies such as light industry optoelectronic devices, micro/nano optics, quantum secure communication and biomedical imaging, in order to make continuous progress in various aspects such as personnel, equipment and research outputs.
Achieving remarkable progress by combining production, education and research:A total of five graduate workstations and one research institute have been jointly established with numerous high-tech enterprises. The first-ever nationwide LED solar simulator with an effective irradiation area of 160mm×160mm, and steady and transient integration, as well as equipment testing, has been developed. A single-crystal P-type PERC battery with an absolute efficiency improvement of nearly 1.0% is developed.
Interdisciplinary and collaborative innovation:In combination with national key disciplines such as Food Science and Engineering of Jiangnan University, spectroscopy techniques are applied to major scientific issues related to national economy and people's livelihood in food safety testing. The research results have been authenticated by the national authority management department, which fills the domestic and international gaps in this field and reaches international leading level.
Cooperation with institutes to complement each other's strengths:Laboratory of Optoelectronics Engineering is jointly established with the National Laboratory for High Power Laser Physics of the Shanghai Opto-Mechanics Institute, and a wavefront sensor capable of simultaneously measuring the intensity and phase of a strong laser beam has been developed, which has reached the international level. Through cooperation with Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics and other institutes in the field of atmospheric optical communication and quantum secrecy communication, the scientific research capability of the graduate students has been greatly improved. In average, each master student can publish 2 SCI papers, which ranks among the toplevelsin the same disciplines in China.
International exchange forimprovement:The school maintains good scientific research cooperation relations with Harvard University, Purdue University, University of California Davis, and Belgium Brunei University, through joint application for scientific research projects, multi-level personnel exchanges, collaborative experimental research, and many other forms. Fruitful scientific research cooperation has been carried out in many fields such as bio-optics, optical detection, and nano-optics.
Master Program of Optical Engineering (Academic)
01 Advanced Spectroscopy Technology and Applications:Study of the basic theory, analytical methods, and application techniques of absorption, fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopy of composite systems. Establishment of the spectral mechanism of organic molecules and the spectroscopy law of the composite system by combining experimental research with quantum theory; Establishment of new methods for spectral analysis of composite systems by combining the spectral technology and modeling calculations; Pioneering the application of spectroscopy to the detection of foods such as liquid foods and Chinese white wine, solving the issues of band overlapping in the composite system amount others, and establishing new technologies for food safety detection, in order to find a rapid, sensitive and accurate target identification and determination method. Seven related research results have been identified as "international leading level", and one second prize of the National Technology Invention was awarded.
02 Optoelectronic devices and systems:Research of new materials, new devices and new technologies in the fields of solar cells, LED devices, integrated light sources, etc. On the basis of improving the conversion efficiency of silicon-based solar cells, a variety of new types of organic solar cells are studied to improve the conversion efficiency of light energy; the application of composite materials and artificial structures in LEDs is studied to improve the luminous efficiency and improve the spectral properties; Research on new technologies for beam shaping and optimizing in order to improve lighting quality. The absolute efficiency of the developed single-crystal P-type PERC battery was increased by nearly 1.0%, which filled the domestic gap; The first-ever LED solar simulator in China was developed and it was rated as one of the top ten highlights at the 2012 International PV Exhibition; the established micro-ring, single-chip, spontaneous white LED technology was rated "2016 China Optical Achievements".
03 Optical communication and optical information:The basic theory of optical transmission under various meteorological and marine environments and the compensation technology based on adaptive optics are studied. By studying the random interference law of turbulent medium and random interference control technology, the key issues such as low energy utilization rate and slow calibration speed of liquid crystal adaptive optical systems are solved. By increasing the fiber coupling efficiency of free space-fiber hybrid communication links, a liquid crystal adaptive optical system with an energy utilization rate of 85% and correction frequency 250Hz is developed. With this system, the telescopy systems, including national observatory 2.16 meters telescope and the Chinese academy of sciences 1.23 meters telescope, achieve quasi-diffractive limit resolution astral imaging.
04 Advanced Optical Imaging Technology:Multi-mode imaging and pattern recognition technologies for biological tissues, cells, and materials are studied. By detecting the phase and intensity of the light transmitted or reflected by the object at the same time, the resolution and contrast of the imaging are improved, thereby providing powerful observation methods for the fields of biology and material medicine. The research results achieved in cooperation with the Shanghai Opto-Mechanics Institute were applied to on-line optical phase detection of XX scientific projects in China. The practical results prove that the overall performance of the developed equipment is better than that of similar equipments in Japan and the United States.
05 Micro-nano structure and optoelectronic functional materials:Research on how to use artificial micro-structure materials to constrain and manipulate light beams, and design new types of micro/nano optical devices. Research on the application of plasmon polaritons (SPPs) optical waveguides, SPPs sensors, SPPs induced absorption enhancement and scattering; research on the unique optical properties of meta-surfaces, research on theapplication ofartificial surface microstructures and diffraction-type micro-optical components in communication, filtering, etc. Research on how to optimize the design of device's material parameters and the structure dimensions, in order to achieve ultra-perfect absorption of electromagnetic waves in the working band.

01 Spectral technology;Study of theoretical methods, key technologies, and application systems for fluorescence, absorption, and Raman spectroscopy.Emphasison the study of application of spectroscopic techniques in food safety testing, and developing sensitive, intelligent, efficient and practical detection technology and application system by combining spectroscopic techniques with intelligent algorithms. The work in spectroscopy theory and technology mainly focuses on the theory of spectroscopy and detection techniques for organic molecules; the work of spectroscopy application in the field of food safety mainly focuses on the spectroscopic techniques in food additive testing, alcoholic food testing, liquid food testing, and water quality and agricultural chemicals monitoring. The workofapplication for biospectroscopy diagnostic mechanism and technology mainly focuess on spectral analysis of the body fluids and its application in disease diagnosis.
02 Optoelectronic devices and applications:thisresearch areafocuses on developing innovative, efficient solar cells and industrial applications of various photovoltaic technologies, novel luminescent materials, and their applications in LEDs, and various types light sources based on LEDs.
03 Optical Communication and Optical Information: Study of random interference laws and random interference control techniques for turbulent media in modern optical communication links, with an aim to improve the coupling efficiency of free space to optical fiber hybrid communication links, furthermore, developing adaptive optical systems with strong anti-interference ability.
04 Imaging and display:Study of using optical methods to detect the internal three-dimensional structure of an object and display the detected information. The main research work includes how to use digital holography technology to achieve true three-dimensional imaging, how to use light field imaging technology for stereo imaging and virtual display, and how to achieve 3D display with naked eyes.
05 Optoelectronic materials:Development of optoelectronic semiconductors and low-dimensional nanomaterials, and their applications in novel optoelectronics fields. Explore the application of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in nano-integrated optoelectronic devices, the properties of artificial micro-structure surfaces and optoelectronic semiconductors, the beam confinement and manipulation technology using micro-nanostructure devices, as well as the electromagnetic resonance absorption of artificial composite structures.

Tuo Zhu (Ph.D., Professor, Doctoral Supervisor): His work mainly focuses on developing molecular spectroscopy theory and its applications. Guoqing Chen (Ph.D., Professor, Doctoral Supervisor): He mainly develops the basic theory, analysis methods, and applied technologies of composite food systems. He has established a new theory and method for the spectroscopy analysis method for composite systems, developed novel technologies for food spectroscopic detection, prompted technological advances in the field of food safety testing, generating important social benefits and significant economic benefits. Shumei Gao(Ph. D, Professor, Master Supervisor): She is mainly engaged in developing optical design and imaging, and spectroscopy technology. More specifically, her research work includes: LED lighting optical design (COB type secondary optical design, LED side incident light guide plate design, etc.), Machine vision inspection technology (large depth of field imaging, machine vision lighting design, etc.), bio-spectrum detection technology (design and construction of spectrometers, fluorescence spectroscopy detection for dairy products and blood, etc.). She has assumed 8 scientific research projects with a total funding of 1.36 million yuan. She has Published 67 papers. In the past 5 years, she has supervised 11 graduate students. Yixin Zhang(Ph.D., Professor, Doctoral Supervisor): Born in 1956, Dr. Zhang received his Ph.D. in Optical Engineering from Nanjing University of Science and Technology in 2005. He has long been engaged in research work in atmospheric optical communication. He was the committee member of the military target characteristics and transmission characteristics project of Technology and Industry for National Defense, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of Printing Engineering Teaching Sub-committee, Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Physics Society; He has won the third prize for scientific and technological advancement in defense science and technology, and the provincial defense science and technology award. He has published 87 papers.
Lifa Hu (Ph.D., Professor, Doctoral Supervisor): He is mainly engaged in developing adaptive optics theory, atmospheric turbulence simulation and detection, wavefront detection and correction system. He has explored a novel theory and method of adaptive optics based on high pixel density, liquid crystal wavefront corrector without any mechanical moving parts, which has promoted progress in the field of large-aperture telescopes, optical imaging and fundus imaging, generating important social benefits and significant economic benefits. He has assumed 2 national fund projects, 1 national fund international cooperation and exchange project, and 1 Jiangsu “six talents peak” project, he has also participated in 6 projects including national fund key projects, 863 key projects, national fund projects, Jilin Province science and technology development project, and National Defense Innovation Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with a total funding of 16.09 million yuan. Cheng Liu (Ph.D., Professor, Doctoral Supervisor): Prof. Liu is mainly engaged in research work in the field of optical imaging and detection. He has many years of research experiences abroad, and he is the first one who carries out research regarding PIE technology domestically, and successfully uses it for addressing far-field and near-field measurement of high power laser beam. Based on the optic-electric engineering laboratory of Jiangnan University and the Shanghai Opto-Electronics Institute, Prof. Liu have developed a compact, high-precision, and high-speed on-line inspection system for the Shenguang II laser system. Its comprehensive performance surpasses that of Japan and the United States. He has assumed the National XX Specialized Research Project, the Military Science and Technology Innovation Project, the National Natural Science Foundation Project, and the Provincial Natural Science Foundation Project. Tian Sang (Ph.D., Professor, and Master's Supervisor): Prof. Sang mainly conducts research in the field of thin-film microstructures and micro-nano-optoelectronic devices, with his focus on the applications of micro-nano devices in communications, filtering, and bio-sensing. In recent years, he has assumed and participated in 7 national natural fund and provincial-level research projects, with a total funding of 1.29 million yuan. He has published 62 articles in important academic journals such as Applied Physics Letters and Optics Express. Of these, 32 articles have been included in SCI retrieval system, with a citation over 200.
